Academic Boosters
This committee is responsible for supplying the awards that are given to KMS students during Awards Programs, which takes place at the end of the first and second semesters. Permanent keepsakes, as well as prize-like rewards, are given. Ongoing help is needed throughout the year in the area of business solicitations. (If you do not want to make general business solicitations, but are willing to inquire at the place you work, or at a company you frequent regularly, your help would be greatly appreciated.) A letter explaining the Academic Booster Program to businesses, and requesting their participation in the program, is available from the Committee Chairperson.
Book Fair
The Book Fair Committee is responsible for planning, promoting, coordinating and executing the Scholastic Book Fairs that are held each spring and fall. In addition to committee responsibilities, a significant number of volunteers are needed during the fairs to assist students/parents/teachers and to man the cashier’s table.
Buildings and Grounds
This committee is responsible for sprucing up the interior (murals, etc.) and exterior (plants, gardens) of the building and school campus. As labor and funds are available, the campus is to be improved with the development and implementation of plans that include installation and maintenance of outdoor areas. The development of the campus should enhance opportunities for student participation in outdoor environmental education projects. In addition, plans for the interior of the building include murals in the hallways and cafeteria which will enhance the appearance of these areas while supporting the curriculum. The school community will be invited to participate in “clean & beautiful” days. These events give families an opportunity to work together and build community spirit while enhancing the Kittredge learning environment.
Bulletin Board
The Bulletin Board Committee is responsible for maintaining the PTA bulletin board, which is located in the school lobby. This bulletin board provides information about PTA activities and functions. Suggestions, offers of one-time help, and regular help with changing the displays and the look of the bulletin board are appreciated.
Career Day
The Career Day Committee assists the school counselor in planning and organizing the Career Day activities. Tasks may include: contacting presenters, updating presenter contact information list, coordinating volunteers to give teachers a break at lunch time, distributing the informational flyer/sign-up sheet to PTA members, and arranging for refreshments for presenters. Ideally, Career Committee members will be available to participate in planning meetings with the counselor during the day, as
well as to assist with details on Career Day.
Chamblee Middle School Liaison
The Chamblee Middle School Liaison works to help assure a smooth transition of 6th graders to Chamblee Middle School. Typically member(s) of this committee attend Chamblee Middle School PTSA Board meetings, convey information from these meetings back to Kittredge, and coordinate a parent/student tour of the Middle School for interested Kittredge parents and students. The PTSA Board meetings are held on the first Monday of the month, at 7:00 p.m. at Chamblee Middle School. (Chamblee Middle School, 3601 Sexton Woods Drive, Atlanta, GA 30341 • 678-874-8202)
Cultural Arts
The Cultural Arts Committee works to enhance the exposure of KMS students to multi-cultural experiences and to enrich the arts education by developing and coordinating a KMS Cultural Arts Program. Programs include: Features Artist Program; Mural Program; Showcase Artists – Selection; Resources Program; and Parent Resources Program.
Directory
This committee is responsible for publishing the KMS Directory including collecting and compiling the directory information and updating the directory database. Initial work can be performed during the summer with the remainder of the work being performed during the first six weeks of school. In addition to committee responsibilities, volunteers are needed to assist with data collection and entry on Registration Day, and during the first few weeks of school.
Dunwoody/Chamblee Parents’ Council
This person/committee attends the meetings of the Dunwoody/Chamblee Parents’ Council, represents the Kittredge PTA at these meetings, and communicates back to the PTA information that is received. The meetings are typically held on the third Monday of the month, at various schools in the Dunwoody/Chamblee area.
Earning for Learning
The Earning for Learning committee identifies and promotes new and existing programs that raise money for the school. Programs in which Kittredge is currently participating include Publix Commitment Cards and Boxtops for Education.
Faculty Representative
The “T” of PTA – volunteer or elected teacher(s) who attend meetings as representatives of the Kittredge staff. The Faculty Representatives are the liaison between teachers and parents. The Representatives reports to the faculty and staff of upcoming events, needs of the PTA, and/or makes suggestions or offers insight from a teacher point of view.
Field Day
Under the direction of a PE instructor, the committee coordinates and executes this fun-filled day of field events, crazy races, and fun activities. In addition to committee participation, a large number of volunteers are needed to help run the activities during Field Day, which typically occurs in April.
Fundraising
This committee seeks out appropriate fundraising avenues that meet the goals of the Kittredge PTA to help fund additional activities and functions for the students.
Gift Wrap/Sally Foster
The Sally Foster Gift Wrap Sale is the traditional Kittredge fall fundraiser. High quality gift wrap—including ribbons, bows, gift tags, boxes, bags, and cards—for every occasion, specialty foods, and holiday items, are the primary components of the fundraiser. Promotional contests and awards are used to create enthusiasm and fun, and to encourage all Kittredge students to participate. The Gift Wrap Committee plans, promotes, coordinates and executes this fundraiser which provides a major component of the PTA budget for the year.
Grant Writing
This committee works to find grant money for projects that benefit Kittredge. The work includes identifying grant opportunities, preparing grant applications, tracking grants through the approval process, and overseeing proper use of the funds.
Historian/Scrapbook
This committee/individual documents and tells the KMS story, through the collection and compilation of stories, pictures, articles, and/or multi-media materials.
Hospitality/Teacher Appreciation
This committee finds thoughtful and creative ways to express appreciation for teachers, staff and bus drivers including special lunches held throughout the year. In addition to the activities and surprises that are ongoing throughout the year, the Hospitality Committee hosts a luncheon on Registration Day (for the staff and PTA Registration Day volunteers), the Teacher/Staff Appreciation Luncheon that typically occurs in May, and a luncheon which occurs on the post-planning workday that follows the last day of school. This committee also arranges for refreshments at the new student ice cream social prior to the start of school.
Legislative
This committee lobbies for the rights of our children, attends DeKalb County School Board meetings and legislative sessions; submits requests to speak as appropriate; and keeps the Kittredge Community abreast of issues affecting our children. This committee will also organize volunteers to attend the “Annual Georgia PTA Day.”
Lunch Bunch
This fun loving group attends lunch with KMS students on a daily basis, sharing greetings, smiles and conversation, while assisting students, excusing students and monitoring activities to make sure that lunch is an enjoyable time for all. Typically a volunteer will attend once a month at the 10:45 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. shift, or the 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. lunch session. Ongoing help is needed throughout the year.
Marquee
The Marquee Committee is responsible for maintaining the school sign, which is located in front of the school. Offers of one-time and regular help with changing the messages are appreciated.
Membership
The Membership Committee organizes the PTA Membership drive, which begins on Registration Day and extends until 100% membership is achieved. The committee works on Registration Day to collect forms and to distribute PTA membership cards and other PTA information. The committee also compiles and maintains the PTA membership list and submits the appropriate paperwork to the State PTA organization.
Newsletter
The Newsletter Committee publishes two newsletters: The KITTREDGE KOURIER, which comes out once a month, and THE WEEKLY COUGAR, which is published weekly except when the KOURIER comes out. These newsletters are sent home via the student courier envelopes each Wednesday. Preparing them involves editorial work, design and layout, and delivery, reproduction, and distribution. The editorial work involves some writing, as well as soliciting and collecting input from teachers, administrators, students, PTA officers or chairpersons, and others. (Articles and items are usually submitted by email.) After design, layout, and proofing, the finished copy is provided to the school for review and reproduction. Volunteers are needed with writing and design skills, as well as volunteers who each week will ensure reproduction and distribution of the finished and approved newsletters in time for the teachers to include them in the students’ courier envelopes.
Partners in Education
This committee works to identify and develop formal relationships between KMS and its business partners. Customarily, one parent serves throughout the year as a liaison between Kittredge and its partners. Our current Partners in Education are Chick-fil-A (at Perimeter Pointe), Guthrie's of Dunwoody, Kroger (at Georgetown) and Northside Hospital. This liaison, in conjunction with the Principal and the business partners, determines the ways the partners may become actively involved in KMS activities and KMS can give back to its partners.
Promotion/Graduation
This committee, in conjunction with the faculty, coordinates the events related to the 6th grade promotion. These events typically include a promotion ceremony, a luncheon, and a graduation party. (Each of these is a separate event.) Planning for these events begins in late winter, with input from parents and students desired. In addition to committee responsibilities, a large number of volunteers will be needed for each of these functions.
Recycling
The members of the recycling committee are attempting to both physically recycle waste and also educate students about recycling. This committee is working on three different fronts: Assisting with recycling materials generated in the classrooms, main office, and the cafeteria. This involves physically taking recyclables to the bins located behind Adams Stadium. Collecting recyclable products from the community including used printer ink cartridge and cell phones. These items will be recycled and also generate funds for the school. Work with students to conduct a survey designed to raise awareness of how much waste can be recycled resulting in a better environment.
Reflections
Reflections is a PTA program that is put on for students with an interest in the arts. The program is open to all students. Reflections takes place during the Fall semester. Students prepare an entry in visual arts, literature, music or photography. Entries are judged at the local level, with the top winners in each category moving on to the next level(s) of competition (i.e., county, state, and national competitions). The rules and requirements of Reflections are distributed through Kittredge by the Reflections Committee, which coordinates and promotes this program at the school level.
Room Parent Committee
The Room Parent Committee is responsible for coordinating the two homeroom parties which occur during the year (typically a Winter Holiday party and a Valentine’s Day party) and assisting teachers when requested. To assure continuity and equity between the classes and grade levels, the Committee Chair serves to coordinate the Grade Level Coordinators (one from each of the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades) and the Grade Level Coordinators serve to coordinate the Homeroom Parents. Typically, one Lead Homeroom Parent is selected from each homeroom to serve as the coordinator of any parents in the homeroom who would like to help with these activities.
School Pictures
The School Pictures Committee makes school pictures happen. Individual pictures as well as Homeroom pictures are taken in the Fall. The committee coordinates the photo sessions, provides assistance during the photo sessions, collects the money and distributes the photographs. In addition to committee responsibilities, parent volunteers are needed to assist with the photo sessions.
School Store
The School Store is a not-for-profit store that assists students and parents in obtaining the needed books and supplies to start the school year, and helps to ensure that school supplies are readily available to students throughout the year. Sixth grade student volunteers run the School Store each morning from 7:50 to 8:10 a.m., selling supplies to fellow students. The School Store Committee works during the summer to prepare for its major sale which occurs on Registration Day; and works throughout the year managing the inventory, the funds and the staffing of the store. In addition to committee responsibilities, volunteers are needed to assist customers on Registration Day, and to set up and take down the store preceding and following Registration Day.
Special Events
The Special Events Committee organizes a variety of activities throughout the year which are intended to facilitate relationships between the families, students, faculty and staff of Kittredge. Events include: Ice Cream Social for new KMS families, fall Family Picnic, Fall Family Dance and the spring Bingo Night.
Spirit Wear
The Spirit Wear Committee promotes school spirit and raises funds by advertising, promoting and selling Spirit Wear throughout the year. Each year the committee premiers a new KMS T-shirt design, which generally becomes part of the 5th Grade Chorus’ performing attire. Spirit Wear also includes long and short-sleeved T-shirts, caps, sweatshirts and automobile cling stickers. These items are made available for purchase on Registration Day, at PTA meetings, at the School Store, and at events sponsored by the Special Events committee.
Teacher Support Committee
The goals of this committee is to coordinate parent volunteers to help out with projects or tasks as requested by the teachers and staff of the school. There are numerous ways that parents can help meet these staff needs including stuffing Wednesday Couriers, assisting with clerical tasks, and working on projects that can be done at home.
Variety Show
Using student emcees and student stagehands, this committee coordinates a spectacular display of Kittredge talent early in the second semester. This is a major production! In addition to committee participation, a large number of volunteers are needed to coordinate, conduct, chaperone, judge, and assist with the auditions and rehearsals; to assist with the stage decorations; and to advertise and promote the show.
Volunteer Coordinator
This committee works to facilitate and improve the coordination of volunteers at Kittredge. Typically this committee compiles the volunteer forms (which are completed by parents on Registration Day) into a volunteer database, and distributes to the committee chairpersons a list of all of the parents who have volunteered to assist with their committee. The volunteer database and spreadsheets are developed within the first week or two of school and are updated as necessary.
